Fascinating, yet terrifying story that I just learned a bit more about rcently.
True story:
- Mexican Gov contracts US special operations to come in and train up an elite paramilitary counter-terrorist unit to curb the cartels in Mexico.
- After building up and selecting the elite force, filled with tip of the spear tactics and mentality and equipment, the Mexican gov't unleashes the newly formed force on the cartels.
- The force is so effective at killing high-value cartel targets, that it is disbanded by the Mexican gov't after only one initial surge.
- This newly formed unit of elite commandos then sees the void in power that they themselves just created, then start a cartel of their own, filled with brutal and lethal "shock and awe" precision and terrible killings, and becomes one of the biggest, and most feared cartels in Mexico.
It's part military story, part crime story, and part diplomatic blunder/gov't corruption story.

FX was supposed to make a series based on The Power of the Dog before Covid. Idk how far it has gotten. Don Winslow has lost his frickin mind over the past several years though so who knows.

You should watch Zero, Zero, Zero. Not based on Zetas, but there's some similar happenings.

Supposedly still coming although I can't find much of an update. They are also making his earlier Neal Carey detective novels into a series. The Force is being made into a Matt Damon movie and his coming trilogy City on Fire has also sold the movie rights. He is cashing checks right now.

Yeah I don't see Matt Damon in that role but I liked the book in general.
