One of my favorite moments that showcased this difference between two kinds of guitar players was when my band was trying to learn “Cult of Personality” by In Living Colour. Our lead player spent countless hours studying tab and practicing to learn how to play it exactly like the record, which requires a lot of hand movement and some significant stretches. He couldn’t believe when I walked into practice after playing around with it for less than an hour and nailed all the notes using a completely different, much simpler, method that I came up with after listening to it.

Yea Vernon Reid actually plays that riff the hard way... no open strings and crazy shifting. Dude is a badass.

20 year player here. A lot of good advice here. Some advice I haven't seen: play with someone who is better than you. Doesn't matter what they play. Piano, bass, keys, whatever. Being around people with more experience is invaluable.
