What the devil is a Thermal Event?

Re: Computer - Does anybody know what a "thermal event" is, what causes it, or how to fix it? Please help, because I've had about all the problems and expense I can take. Still no power, riding herd on my 80-year-old mother to keep her off her roof, generator died/bought another, fish in our big pond dying/bought huge aerator, and now my computer won't start up!!!
I can't say I'm desperate, because I'm using my husband's right now and other people have much bigger problems, but MY computer has MY stuff on it!
It's a Dell with WindowsXP and had been off ever since we lost power until day before yesterday (once we replaced the *@&$%! generator that died and got a bigger one.) Anyway, I got a black screen with the message: "Caution! Last shutdown due to thermal event. F1 to continue, F2 for setup."
I hit F1 because I had to pay bills (and wouldn't know what to do in setup anyway), then turned it off. The next time it turned on just fine; the third time it got cranky and stayed that way. The lights will blink on the tower as usual when I push the button, then it instantly shuts down (I can hear it). Is there something I can do to get it to turn on, or should I take it in for repair, or will I have to buy another? It's almost 4 yrs old but more than meets my needs.
Anyone who answers this out of the goodness of his/her heart, please bear in mind that I'm not a whiz with computers and keep the info stupidly simple. Thanks.

Some processors automatically shut down your computer if they're overheating
that's what my first thoughts were upon reading this

So maybe I should just wait until we get power and the temp downstairs is below 80?
On second thought, I don't think that's it, because it wasn't "shut down due to thermal event" in the first place. It was shut down due to power failure. Too, when I turned it on the first time, it was only about 75 degrees.
Oh, and thanks for answering.

Just what is that link supposed to mean? Why don't you just come right out and say it, or is it that you enjoy making fun of other people's problems while hiding behind a keyboard? I'm really not in the mood for joking around today.

sounds like you might have gotten a surge before the power failure that fried a couple key components
you might be able to get them replaced, though, if you don't want to buy a whole new machine

Wonderful. But thanks for helping. And no thanks at all to "just me".

Remain calm. All is well. And it's best to have a sense of humor in these trying times.

Alert! Previous shutdown due to thermal event.
The microprocessor or hard drive overheated the last time you used the computer.
Ensure that nothing is blocking the chassis airflow vents on the back of the computer and that the fan inside the computer is working properly. Also, ensure that the microprocessor heat sink is properly installed.

Okay. Deep breath. Calming down. But I got lost at "Also, ensure that the microprocessor heat sink is properly installed" so I guess I'm gonna have to take the thing to somebody who understands it. Thanks.
Edited to add: By the way and believe it or not, I usually have a great sense of humor.

Make sure the CPU fan is operating. If there are any other chip fans on the motherboard, make sure they are operating.
Make sure the case fan(s) is/are working and that there is no obstruction to the airflow into and out of the case.
Check your CPU's heat sink. It may have loosened so your not getting proper cooling. You might also want to put new thermal paste or a pad on your CPU to make sure it has good contact.
Some systems let you monitor you temps either in BIOS or through a program. If you have something like this, take a look at your system temps.
Removing dust collected in the CPU fan / heatsink is not complicated, however you will be wise to not rush it... Carefully remove everything, piece by piece and suck the dust out with a vacuum cleaner, then use a brush to clean the hard to reach places in the fan blades and heat sink before putting it all back.

Look bitch do you want to fight me or something?

When a man loses his temper over something simple like this he's an a-hole, he can also be called a bitch, or a fig, or a pussy, etc.

Thanks for the instructions. Will do everything I can and if it's still giving problems I'll turn it over to someone more capable, I guess. Have to take my mom some lunch now, but I really do appreciate the help.

Oh. But, see, I try not to call names.

Not really. Before, I wasn't in the mood for joking around. Now, I'm not in the mood for fighting.
