Well give some credit to the coaches too as it was probably their call.
You can call the play with the infield in where the runner judges the ball, where it’s hit, how hard it’s hit and decides, but that takes a split second away from him.
Or you can decide in advance that your runner is going on any ground ball. That gives him the jump, but in a sharp hit right at a fielder he is probably out.
It’s one of those plays where the runner and coach are smart and aggressive if the runner is safe and they are dumb if he’s out, at least how most fans view those things.
It’s like running or throwing the ball on fourth and goal from the 2 yd line. Whichever way you go was smart if you make it, dumb if you don’t.
