When we flew with my dude at 2.5 years old we brought the carseat on and he rode in it like a champ. Plus it was nice to already have it for the rental car. The worst part was having to haul it around the airport.

Check EVERYTHING!
We tried carrying on everything, we tried carrying on only stroller and bags.
The easiest thing is to check everything possible. It sucks being a pack mule through ATL rushing to make your connection.
Airlines let you check baby related stuff for free too.
