Colonizing nations can only show primitives the way. If they learn the way (like HK) they're gonna have to build defensive systems like Taiwan.
If they don't learn the way (like Africa) ya gotta let them go back to hunter/gatherer condition.
The best student was the primitive Brits. They learned a LOT from the Romans who eventually gave up on them.
The Irish didn't go to Roman school so they were a few hundred years behind the Brits.

This line gets parroted but its not actually true. The lease was on the expansion of territory after the second opium war. Hong Kong island which is the center of commerce was ceded in perpetuity after the first opium war.
The only lease to expire was the new territories.
