re: Civil War Confederate veteran interview

One thing I always go back to is that Lincoln was not on the ballot whatsoever in the states that eventually seceded and formed the Confederacy. Yet, he was still elected President despite not even being a candidate in the South. It was a humbling experience to an entire region of the US that they ultimately had zero national political power. It offended their sense of honor and they saw their way of live including slavery at the mercy of the Northern banker/industrialist. Their tempers flared and they went to war.
