The majority of Taiwanese people absolutely consider themselves a separate country. They are proud of their independence. And they just want to be recognized and left the frick alone.

I think this statement and Eurocat's statement are not incorrect... but it isn't entirely correct, either.

The literal and legal fact is, very few nations acknowledge Taiwan as an independent country through law.

The de facto facts are, the US and many other countries *treat* Taiwan as a separate country both economically and politically. The US has established American Institute of Taiwan to operate as an Embassy in a country, even though legally it is not recognized as a country.

If a neighboring country to Taiwan suddenly attacked Taiwan, you can 100% count on the US defending Taiwan. Personally, I feel Taiwan is a much more reliable and important ally than Israel and/or any European country (short of England).

If a neighboring country to China suddenly attacked China, I don't think you can expect the US to defend China.

Now, realistically, does Taiwan sound like a country, or not?
