there were times in the 90s where the saints would get penalties for the crowd noise being so loud. that is when we had 70,000 saints fans in the dome not a dome half filled with business people and visitors.

This. There were times back then when the opposing tackles had absolutely no shot against Rickey Jackson & Pat Swilling because of the crowd noise. They would get embarrassed all game long especially on 3rd & long.
You have to remember this is before teams had the idea to use silent snap counts. The noise in the Dome back then also forced teams to develop another route to help their tackles hear the snap. They started making the tackles hold hands with the guards. Since the guards were closer to the center, they heard the snap. By holding hands, the tackles could tell the snap once the guards began to move.
