One thing I've always found interesting is how silent people are while the National Anthem is being played. Not sung, but played. I noticed this when I went to a baseball game a few weeks ago. No singer, no band, the anthem was played over the speakers. Additionally, most people who are singing are just mumbling along with it.
And it's not that people are afraid to sing out loud in public, because later in the game everyone was singing along to "Callin' Baton Rouge".

Mandatory patriotism is certainly a sign of a free country.
