Installing new light fixture issues

changed about four light fixtures with no problem. Get to the chandelier and there's two black wires and no white.
Look up online trying to figure out which goes where. Think I have it and wire it up. Flip the breaker on and there's a pop. Lights don't work. And nothing happens when I flip the breaker on/off.
I'm getting power from the ceiling. Is the fixture shorted out? Ideas? It's on a long chain and a real pain in the arse to test with the old one but that might be the only way to do it.

Was the chandelier working before? Is one of the wires ribbed? That should go to white. I would test with some other fixture.

Yes, the previous one worked. One is sightly ribbed but I mean ever so slightly. The instructions were garbage.

An old light works but the switch is definitely shot. Won't turn it off except at the breaker.
The new fixture doesn't do anything. Thinking maybe the switch and the fixture got fried.

how many switches to the fixture

Get a pencil type non-contact electrical sensor ($10) and separate the two wires. Flip the switch tp determine which one is hot.
Or lick your fingers and do the same thing if you're adventurous.
Just kidding! Everyone should own one of these electrical sensors.

just installed several fixtures myself and had similar issue. if the wires on the chandelier are the same color, look for some writing/white print, if it has it, that is your white.

It's got to be the fixture.
I replaced the switch. Other fixtures work.
I've tried the two black wires both ways and nothing.
I'm getting power to the light with my voltage tester.
Returning it and this time will test it from the floor with the six feet of wire they give you rather than wasting time putting it together.

If it’s not too much trouble take one of the ones down that you know works and put it in the location you’re not sure about and you’ll get a great idea right there

I agree, there's probably a loose wire from one of the sockets that's grounding it. Return the fixture.
