I made it through a big surgery and have been playing for a few weeks.

Any tips as far as how you overcame the fear of impacting the ground with an iron shot?

I guess I’m reluctant to really go after an iron shot because I find myself hitting a good number of thin shots.

I’m trying to learn to “pick” instead of “dig” with mixed results.

Any “pickers” out there with suggestions?

All in all, I’m glad to be alive and playing golf. Made 3 birdies today, shot 37 on the front, but found my “9 windows” on the back and birdied 18 to shoot 46.

1) Glad you’re alive bro.
2) After my cancer surgery, it took a while for me to dig again.
If your body is letting you play golf, you’re ready. Just hit a few punch shots. Make yourself get into the ground. For me, there was scar tissue that I broke during PT. That pain was the worst. Just go for it and get it over with. It’s like that first tackle in middle school football.

I will try hitting punch shots on the range.

I did have a couple of good wedges today, before I got in the zone with my “windows.”

Hit one armed shots as hard as you can. Alternate between left and right. Do this until the fear of digging is gone. Good luck to you bro

How old are you? Did you have CABG or Valve Surgery? Are you on warfarin? Don't see any of this affecting golf, unless you're concerned about your chest wires?? Most are getting plated now, so that shouldn't be a concern. Anyhow, you should be good to grip / rip!!

Make your posture a little more upright, til the sole is barely touching the ground, and stay as level as you can through the swing.

Did you have CABG or Valve Surgery? Aortic valve replacement and 3 bypasses
Are you on warfarin? Yes

Most are getting plated now, so that shouldn't be a concern. I have a titianiun plate
Anyhow, you should be good to grip / rip!!
Thanks, I’m probably just mentally blocked from going after it.

Will work on range some and gain confidence.

Glad that you are back at it.

Take your time and the confidence that you won't injure yourself will return.

After my knee replacement, I had a lot of apprehension about swinging hard at first.

I think you’re right.

I’ll just keep playing.

After July, if I’m still struggling, I’ll get our pro to take a look.

Had 2 by passes , pig valve and repair of aortic aneurysm with chest being wired...not plated..in Feb 2020....started back playing in May 2020 took it easy played once a week for three months and then moved to twice a week as my chest tolerated the discomfort...chest started to hurt back in November and because of robotic prostate surgery had to lay off another 8 weeks resumed back in Feb with some pain ...finally had a CT scan thinking a non-union of sternum...NO....its a Bucking sternal wire poking me ...will have surgery to remove wires soon as now every time I cough/swing a driver hard...painful reminder of what heart surgery can cause...make dam sure if you have heart surgery go with a surgeon that produces good outcomes and plates the chest...Every patient who has there chest cracked open at Cleveland Clinic is plated...it is the gold standard now not Bucking wires.

I’m glad I have the plates.

Sorry you are suffering, and I hope everything goes great with the wire removal.

get you an impact bag and progressively advance according to your tolerance. I have been a PT for over 20 years and never have heard of someone doing damage from golfing. Someone mentioned earlier about scar tissue and that can break loose and cause pain but you want to get rid of that anyway.
