Maybe there is just an increase in reporting a crime as a hate crime.

Before coronavirus, if a black person stabbed an Asian person did anyone report that as a hate crime?

Agree. Same with mass shooting classifications. Before the liberal push everyday hood shootings with multiple victims were never considered mass shootings. Now they're suddenly being classified as such.
There's a case here in Richmond where a 3 month old and her mother were killed with other victims and all the news keeps saying is mass shooting. Thing is, so far there are more arrested shooters than victims. In other words a couple of groups shooting at each other with no regard for those in the middle. While I guess technically a mass shooting it's not in the traditional sense. Only being classified as such because of the gun control push.
