It is both a moral community problem (ie the moral community with the highest status does not condemn bastardy) and an incentive problem - bastardy does not condemn one to poverty, as it usually would have been in previous times.

Men and women would have acted like this given the same societal factors across our existence. It is only just now that we are in a position where it isn't repugnant,
