quote:Respect for authority and a general understanding of, and adherence to, social norms is not something that can be instilled through punishment. There are certain subcultures in America with folks constantly in and out of jail. They don't develop a respect for authority; they develop a disdain for authority.
But, because teachers don't paddle, kids grow up not respecting authority because there are no consequences. They grow up to resist arrest, run from police, then expect to get out of it, because they always have had someone bail them out.
Discipline in school will only work if it's reinforced in the home. Absent that, you're wasting your time.
