I checked it out, along with the original WaPo opinion piece.

I don't see gain-of-function research has inherently problematic; it's critical in virology and takes place all over the world. I'd love to lay this at the feet of Fauci because I don't like him, but attributing this to him as opposed to the lab and Chinese authorities seems like a stretch. Maybe Fauci et al should have known better than to conduct this research there but that's about all I can put on him right now.

The problem is that China is essentially a black box, so the best we have to go on is speculation. I'm willing to accept that it escaped from that lab, and I'm willing to accept that the WHO has covered for China from Day 1, but it gets a little messier when we start assigning blame outside of that.
