When did everyone start wearing these half face shields when batting?

I’ll admit Covid had made me fall hard out of sports over the past year or so. So I assume I’m late to the party noticing this (along with the oven mitt they wear running the bases now).

Were their rule changes or something? I remember some players with an injury or something wearing these from time to time but now it’s every guy.

I’ll admit I get why they do it and nobody wants to catch one hard and high or jam a finger sliding in. What happened for everyone to seemingly shift to these so rapidly in the last year or two?

It’s fun getting old and having “get off my lawn” moments like this but dammit I’m only 26

Deichmann probably started the trend at LSU after he got popped in the face with a ball.

Over the last ~5 years they've become increasingly popular for obvious reasons. They apparently don't impede batter vision enough to discourage players from wearing them so the tradeoff must be worth it. I'm less convinced the oven mitts are useful, but I really have no idea. I feel like in the last year or two we've seen less of them, but that may just be the players we have, or maybe they just became 'normal' and I don't notice them anymore.

So it’s the players asking for it?

It’s been a growing trend at the major league level and it’s starting to take place in college baseball now.

It starts in youth leagues. Batters are required to wear a full cage OR a C flap. (What you are talking about) The true players opt for a C flap because it offers some protection with minimal view obstruction. If you learn to hhits a child with one from a young age it just becomes part of your natural attire.

I was in the batters box in H.S. when the batter got hit on the cheekbone with a fastball. POP! I will never forget the sound

What are the oven mitt gloves for? Is it floor sliding and your hand doesn’t get stepped on?

Protects your hand during head first slides, from “jamming” on the bag and/or getting “spiked” from an opponent. shite can hurt.

Last year. Eddie Smith promoted it and told me players didn't resist.

You were in the batters box when he got hit? Lucky!! We were only allowed to bat 1 at a time.
