A friend has a large (wonderful) Doberman with torn Achilles’ tendons (3 in each rear hock). Has anyone had experience with surgery to repair? Interested in the recovery/pain management process.
Alternatively, has anyone used hock braces instead of going the surgical route?

Just to bump this up.

I have no experience with this at all but a very good friend of mine is a veterinarian surgeon. He does bunches.

If you decide to have it done, take it to someone that does it regularly.

It’s a tough surgery in dogs as they can’t exactly rest and rehab like us but I have had a few patients get it done and with proper rehab they do well. But definitely have a board certified surgeon do it.

Just had this procedure done on my boxer. We are a little over 4 weeks in and have around 6 more weeks till they feel he will be fully recovered. First 2 weeks are the worst, trying to keep him from biting or licking at the stitches. Kennel bound when we aren’t home.

Yes. Had to have it done on my heeler when she was a pup. Depending on the dog's energy levels, it can be easier/harder on them. Age plays a factor too, for obvious reasons. Vet gave us meds for pain/antibiotic management. Key thing is to get them to rest.
