Theoretically, it is within our ability to deflect an asteroid the size of the K-T impactor with nuclear explosions until it is off its collision course. The problem is that these rocks are small in the grand scheme of things, and as BBT says in Armageddon “It’s a big arse sky.” We would never be able to send a deflection mission to the asteroid in enough time. There’s also no way to stop a Texas size asteroid like in Armageddon. You would need a bomb 100,000 more powerful than the Tsar Bomba to affect an object that size.
The problem is that these large meteors come from the Taurid meteor stream that comes from a sun-facing direction I believe, and we have difficulty detecting them in a timely manner.
There is mounting evidence that a civilization-ending impact occurred only approx 12,000 years ago. That we do not dedicate more of our resources towards detection and interdiction is crazy to me.
