Maybe Glendale and Burbank - have no idea what these areas are like but might be some cheaper options than in the heart of LA
Unless there are some other redwoods im not familiar with, the redwoods are also north of San Francisco.
There’s lots of things to do in Pasadena, so that would be a good place to stay. Burbank and Glendale should be cheaper, but have more generic mall and restaurant offerings. For a visitor, there isn’t much purpose to hang out in Burbank or Glendale; whereas you’d be perfectly fine spending a majority of your trip in Pasadena.
