I was the stoner with nerd brains and jock athletic ability that told the coaches to F Off for being jerks and classmates turned to for explanations when the teachers couldn't express ideas/concepts well.
Wasn't the smartest as there 2 or 3 smarter in my class. Probably was the best all around athlete just not a superstar at everything. Baseball and track I was very good (Junior Olympic sprinter), football I was being scouted by the big colleges before I even got to HS, basketball never excited me in the least.
Because I moved a lot I never bothered to get really close to friends. As in HS ended and so did those friendships, except 1 who OD'd a few years later. Was OK as I moved away for college and parents moved again while I was a sophomore so haven't been back in 35 years. I just do not get attached to people, places, things, as they're all ephemeral.
All the moving around led to my ease of communication with everyone. Race, sex, creed, national origin, social class, ethnicity, doesn't matter. I understand them, they understand me. Always walked my own path, lead rather than follow, but went alone if nobody else was interested. It's easier to do when one has confidence in their brains and physicality to get through whatever they set their mind to.
