I subscribe to the 12 Monkeys vs. the Back to the Future view of time travel. There's only one timeline and if you did travel back in time and someone had written a historical narrative on it, you'd have been written into history before you travelled back in time.

I think Lost explains it best with the phrase "whatever happened, happened". It's a more interesting approach to time traveling.
