That's exactly the case. This is what Griff and SVG have repeatedly said. They want to become a defense first team (after they traded away their best defender) and take time to develop the young players.

You know how sometimes football players would take ballet or do yoga to improve their balance which improves their overall football skills? I think this is what the Van Gundy experiment is for.

Can you make Zion and Ingram 20% better on defense than they would have been otherwise? If not you've lost nothing because the team wasn't expected to win in this time frame anyway. If it works, you're better off in the long term because your core pieces are easier to build around since they are better defenders.

It really is as simple as that IMO. And I do think the team has improved, but they still aren't good yet. The failure isn't another losing season, it's allowing the fans to believe winning is the goal this year. Griff should have shut that down and told people he's trying to do something hard that will pay off long term but may cause pain this season.
