Probable cause might have been battery low on water causing gases to build and ignite from an arch out. Purchased two new batteries and trolling motor runs fine now. Wash area near batteries good with soap and water to rid of any acid from explosion.

Wash it again use baking soda and then repeat you can’t wash it enough
