You cant watch Sopranos through the 2021 lens. Thats the OPs problem.
Sopranos and The Wire are the Citizen Kane of TV in that they revolutionized the modern era of premiere TV
IDk about that.
Watching the first season of Columbo from 1971 and its still way ahead of The Sopranos and The Wire.
Was there a lull in great television, sure.
Especially the 90's.
But acting like the Sopranos and The Wire changed television or even Breaking Bad or Mad Men is a misnomer.
Shite, the first season of Columbo blows them out of the water. And I love Mad Men and Breaking Bad.
There's nothing special about Sopranos, they just re-introduced the wheel to a younger audience that grew up on Full House.

Wow. What a ridiculous take. Columbo is good TV. Nothing about it putts it ahead of the Sopranos or BB.
I mean, Barney Miller and Taxi were good TV too. None approach Sopranos.

Never watched an entire season of Columbo but this seems a bizarre take. Did it have a continuing story line? The Sopranos weren't the first to do it but I just can't see comparing any series of stand-alone episodes to masterpieces like Sopranos or the Wire. Hill Street Blues, Wiseguy, Babylon 5 all did story arc tv pretty well before The Sopranos came along but Columbo? WTF?

was Columbo not a crime of the week show? One you don't have to watch in any particular order. I don't know that i saw more than a couple of episodes so i can't comment on the quality but the revolution was not quality per se but season long and even series long story arcs. If you want to give an old show more credit for revolutionizing TV i would think it would be Hill Street Blues
