Yeah, I'm copying bc I didnt want to hijack the other thread.
Situation:
Batter swings a hits a dinker 6 feet in the air (maybe 12 feet from plate) near first baseline. Has tons of spin on it. First baseman and pitcher both scramble to get it. It falls under the glove of the pitcher and she kicks the ball 6 feet into foul territory. While going after the kicked ball, the pitcher, first baseman, and runner all collide in foul territory.
First baseman gets up and tosses ball to first (2nd baseman covering) for the out while batter lays on the ground run over from other 2 chasing a kicked ball.
What is the ruling?

Runner gets 1st obviously.

This deals with obstruction of baserunner. If the fielder is deemed to be in the act of fielding the ball and collides with the baserunner there is no obstruction. It's a tough call because the ball was booted but I think the rule gives some leeway for the fielder.

I feel like this was or would be a reader sumbitted entry to Sports Illustrated for Kids.

Runner should be safe at 1st due to obstruction. Unless......it was ruled that the runner was running outside the base path, then the runner is out on interference.

Judgement call. Based on if runner ran out of basepath or not

Pics of base runner?

Why is she running in foul territory? That’s not the basepath

This is where the ole umpire judgement comes into play. Very hard call but the umpire has to determine if the runner blocked the fielders from making play, or did fielders block runner from advancing to base...from your story I would of ruled runner safe due to obstruction. Maybe they saw it as she was out of running lane or purposely got in way of fielders. Tough call either way that you dont see very often.
