A few years ago I met the original "Paula," from the 1963 hit song, "Hey, Paula." She and the songwriter, Ray Hildebrand, were college friends, and she was with him when he wrote the song. They recorded it together and it became a local hit. When the song was bought by a record company, they decided they didn't want an Hispanic female singer, so Jill Jackson got the record deal. Paula Estrada wasn’t bitter about it. She enjoyed the experience and went on to become a popular Tejano singer, later inducted into the Tejano Music Hall of Fame.

I was a kid when this song came out and my mom was young enough to still watch American Bandstand and we watched together.

Hey Paula

Sundown is about Cathy Smith, the woman associated with Belushi's death and connected to many other musicians, some of which as their drug dealer.

Which is why it's inclusion in Knives Out is the best inside joke in the movie. A song about a woman who kills a celebrity with an accidental overdose in a movie about a woman who thinks she kills a celebrity with an accidental overdose.
