That's like saying that if a heart surgeon is capable of saving someone's life after a torn aorta, why didn't they prevent it from happening in the first place? I mean, there's a huge difference between analyzing and fixing something that's already happened and reading the future to know exactly when it will happen and taking measures to stop it.

I get your point, but a torn aorta is a bad example.

A better example is clogged arteries. You can assess this risk in advance (either through cholesterol blood testing or by heart scans), if a doctor is doing his job, so heart surgery often shouldn't be necessary because you can take appropriate steps to prevent it.

Many aspects of life are like this -- keep eyes open and assess what's going on to see potential problems on the horizon. Then fix the stuff that's starting the turn bad, before it gets to a full-blown crisis.

Now of course this doesn't apply to every single thing in coaching or in life, but the point is to anticipate problems as best you can, to address them early before they turn catestrophic.
