He did want to as of December according to PM who told him focusing only on baseball was a bad idea.

Then this could just boil down to a scholarship numbers thing. Baseball didn’t have 100% to give him, so in that regard Mainieri is correct, it’s a bad idea.

Yeah but PM also said he was caught off guard. That doesn’t seem like a scholarship issues coming up but a PT issue.

I do wonder if/how the scholarship conversation played into all of this. I believe his family is pretty well-off as others have said, but the scholarship issue could also just be adding insult to injury for Mo.

Seems like it’s likely a lot of frustration just coming to a head. When you’re on a football scholarship at a school like LSU, the expectation is that you are first and foremost a football player. That means missing significant portions of the baseball offseason. Combine that with the short season last year, COVID isolation, etc. and it’s just an all around shitty situation.

But if he leaves the football team (regardless of whether he picks up a baseball scholarship) that’s another 2019 initial counter wasted. I would think it puts Paul in a tough spot - if he tells Hampton he should stick with both sports and Hampton leaves out of frustration, Mainieri is the bad guy. But if he tells Hampton “sure, no problem” he’s still the bad guy for wasting a football scholarship.

The only outcome that’s not a net loss for LSU is Hampton sticking it out with both sports which seems to be the suggestion Maineiri made when asked, if you believe him.

Sucks but I wish the best for the kid. Sounds like his passion is definitely baseball.
