I get the books blended together, so it could have not been in the original book, but one of them goes into the story of him as a "war time consigliere". But I'm almost certain the original book atleast references his talent for tactical street maneuvering. One of the books has Vito basically in the Castellamarese Wars (spelling), where he outdoes Masseria and Maranzano. They definitely indicate the Genco was crucial in Vito becoming who he was and reaching the heights into the business.

I only read the first book. Do you recommend the sequels? The Lucy Mancini Gaping Vagina interlude kind of turned me off from Puzzo's writing.
