You may be right, there's no point in arguing about it. What's indisputable is that's when it became that ugly in front of that many people.
Politocians doing that behind closed doors or to a small audience is still wrong, but weaponizing it brings it to a new level. Arguing different is disenginous.
They knew exactly what they were doing to Kavanaugh and it was ridiculous

And you're wrong. Bork was a case study for us in one of my graduate classes on how SCOTUS approval process fundamentally shifted from being fairly apolitical to one of the hardest fought politically.
It's also worth looking at the voting record for SCOTUS nominees from Republican and Democrat presidents. There is a rather large difference between the two when it comes to bipartisan approval post-Bork.
