Good Lord, people have been using this exercise as a teaching tool for at least 50 years.
But I’m not sure it is particularly relevant to choir class.

That's not true. 50 years ago you had teachers trying to teach children about discrimination and actual racism. There was no attempt to paint anyone as "privileged" or "targeted".
