Most patio drops are a half inch pipe and probably not sufficient to run the generator. You can definitely run central units on portables, but I would check the THD ratings and get one of these soft starts Soft Start. It’s a 4 stage ramp up process for the compressor.

I think I’ve zeroed in on the Pulsar 12k surge generator as it provides the wattage and fuel efficiency to make it sensible. I just got one quote for a standby, seems the dealers are adding $5k for installation compared to what I can buy the generator and transfer switch online for. Not sure that’s worth it when I probably average maybe 24 hours of power loss a year.

I would go the portable AC route. I have a Troybilt 9000W generator that will run my entire house except central AC. I have three window units that I place in the house. I bought this set up after having nothing during a week long power outage after Gustav. I haven't had to use it since purchasing. But the window units have come in handy a couple of times in the summer when my central AC goes down on a Sunday and we have to wait until Monday for the HVAC guy.

Exactly. I’d rather save the money and have a portable generator than a stand by

She can come shower with me and my hot water next power outage. She'll be more than comfortable.

I was talking about myself if the offer stands. AmosMrsAndTwins needed power and running water for lil Amos.

[quote]They are powered via extension cords to 5000 w generator.

Have you looked into back feeding through your dryer?. It's much more efficient. I do this with a 6,500 watt portable and can power 3 small window units, fridge, lights,tv as needed.

My in laws did it that way - worked like a savior during Laura. Please tell me about how to build the correct cord for that set up.
It is legal, isn't it?

It's not hard. i went to an electric supply company, and got a heavy duty cable. mine is 10awg/4c.
On one end attach the plug that fits the 240A on generator, and other end get a plug that is same as your dryer.
Turn off main breaker FIRST and any big breakers like ac, stove, water heater.Only power what you need.
Oh and make sure you get a long enough power cord to keep generator away from house. You could also get some plywood and make an access hole and run through a window.

Received my quote back last night. $1100 for everything. All little more than the $700 that someone else paid in this thread. I’ll probably roll with it since this guy has done work for me before and he’s been very reliable when called upon. I reached out to him last Sunday, he came out to the house Monday evening, and got the quote to me on Thursday evening.

I had an electrician quote me $3400. I about fell over. I need a 80ft 50amp cable to my patio which gets pricey. He said he wouldn’t put an interlock kit without a whole house surge protector. Need to research that, but this all sounds way too much.
