Easiest ones to get started with are the ones that track the S&P 500 and the Russel 1000. Also some international based funds.
I’m not a sophisticated index fund guy, just use Schwab’s provided large cap, small cap, S&P, and international mutual funds for my IRA. My wife insists on using a target date fund that underperforms in hers.

I have never understood the “target date funds” only because there should be like 2. About to retire and will retire in 30 years. Retiring in 40 years vs 15 years should be the same fund.
