Realistic expectation of buying a used vehicle

I am about to start looking at buying a new vehicle. I am thinking of going used, just to get a few more features at a lower price. I am looking to spend in the area of 40k-50k. how much can I realistically expect to get off the asking price? I have seen people on the internet claiming they buy their used vehicles 20% lower than asking price, and that just seems crazy to me. I would love to get that much off if I can. If anyone has any suggestions, please share.
Thanks in advance.

Traditional dealer you will probably be able to ask thousands off the asking price.
CarMax/Carvana type dealer you will pay exactly the asking price.

Used vehicles have experienced some firming of prices during the pandemic.
Some popular make/ model go quickly.
Look at kelly blue book. They give dealer, private party, and wholesale prices.
Good luck!

Used cars are at there most expensive value right now. With that price range, you can buy new. Plus you didn’t list mileage expectations

Use the Auto Tempest website as a one stop site to look at similar cars from different listing sites. See what kind of median you can find.
Compare to KBB and NADA values.
Offer less.

With internet pricing having to be so competitive to be lower than the ‘other guy’, they will be semi-firm on internet price. Just do research on prices, realize you dont want to pay retail, but you cant buy at trade-in value either.

What do you plan on buying used that would cost 40-50k? You can get a nice new car for under that

Kbb - the price you want to buy it at.
NADA - the price they want to sell it at.
Good luck

That’s what I was thinking. Maybe I just like cheap cars but if I were looking to spend $45k, I would be looking brand new. I don’t need a used Mercedes, I’d but a brand new Acura instead.
If financing, better rates on new cars too. Easy decision for me. Good luck in your search.

Buying new with a 0-2% interest rate is a better deal right now imo.

That Hyundai Genesis is really nice for that price.
A bit more gets you the Equus and that car is georgeous. Extremely nice.
Edited to add the new Equus will be out of that price range. Wow. Looks great though
