I was born in Winchester and my mother taught at Handley.
It was a sleepy town, where nothing had ever changed.
The valley was always poorer than the Piedmont, but Berryville and Winchester both had real money. And they survived the war without too much damage.
I moved away a long time ago and I’m sure my memories are hopelessly out of date. I believe Winchester has exploded?
We’re truly an occupied people though, and I mean that seriously. And if I was moving to Virginia I would look at the SW quadrant. Stay away from DC and stay away from Richmond.
It’s admittedly personal for me, but the politics break my heart.
