In the long run, I think most 80's music suffered big time from the trendy sound fads they embraced at the time. All the synthesizers, and electric drum beats, and sound effects etc were cutting edge technology at the time, but that stuff did not age well imo.
But.... if you look for it, lots of those great 80s bands have put out acoustic versions of their work and it's incredible what happens when all the gimmicky synthetic 80s stuff stripped out.
For example:
Aha's "Take on Me" is about as synthetic 80's as it gets-----> LINK.... (1.2 billion youtube views btw. Wow)
But, now listen to it with the synthetic 80's stripped out------> ...LINK
Men at Work is another good example. It's crazy how much more serious their music gets when you strip the 80s technology out of it

Springsteen's Born in the USA album has a whole different feel when it is played stripped out. It 's a protest album overall. It suffers from too much engineering. The title track almost sounds triumphal whereas the acoustic is much darker
