Neighbor has an Etec. It sees moderate amount of use. 225hp. Been in the shop multiple times. Blew up the lower unit because evinrude messed up and put an underated one on it from factory supposedly. ECU went out after that. Alot of money in it in just two repairs.
When it's running its a beast. Wouldn't own one myself

I refuse to get into a boat with a big black anchor on the back.

The most reliable Evinrudes made were the 2 stroke models by OMC. I still run a 30 HP my dad bought new in the early 90's from Keeth's Marine in Jonesville La. Stills runs as good as new today.

I’ve owned each brand at one time or another. As someone else posted, Merc has the high hp market covered up right now. Advancements in weight savings and supercharging are fueling the outboard craze on performance boats as well as large CCs.
I had my best luck, personally, with Yamaha. However, that was their V6 line in the 2 stroke days. I had a friend that worked at the Yamaha test center on Diversion Canal for years. Always heard about performance/endurance tests between brands, new product releases etc. Yamaha really did their homework. Damn near bulletproof back then. In fact, my FIL is still running a ‘85 model long shaft 150 on his Boston Whaler.
Have another friend that’s currently a Suzuki factory rep. Years back, I wouldn’t have touched one with a 10ft pole. However, in talking with him and seeing friends run Suzuki’s between 200 and 350hp, they are holding up very well.
The ETEC was a great motor as well. Shame OMC went under.
I’m currently in the heavy construction equipment industry. Customers always have their favorites because of past experiences. Doesn’t necessarily mean one is built better than the other, although different brands typically have different strengths/weaknesses. It may have more to do with the customer’s individual experiences. How was he treated by the dealer or manufacturer in a warranty situation? I tell my customers , “They’re all yellow iron and they all break. It’s how it’s addressed after the fact that usually makes the difference.” Sales sells the first unit, service sells the subsequent ones. Typically works the same with cars, trucks, boats..........

I had a 1992 Basscat with a Johnson fast strike and my nephew sold his boat after 24 years with a 70 hp Evinrude on it. Boat motors has small issues like carbs needed cleaning after a few years, water pump changes, and one a stuck solenoid when we accidentally reversed the battery terminals. We never had any major issues.
As far as the two Etec engines I had they only seen the shop for the 3 yr tune up.
Guess I have been lucky. My only complaint was lack of servicing dealers.
New boats my small and big one again went Mercury due to that basically the most common engine and when dealers say this is what I have instock versus waiting 20 weeks it was an easy choice. They have more Mercury dealers around to service the product.
