it's a quote from a Marine that fought on Iwo, from "Flags of Our Fathers" if you've ever been in the military, or just around military folks a lot, then you've noticed that gallows humor is the norm, but it's quite possible that was his perception, the quote was made while Bradley was conducting interviews for the book, decades after the war

The USMC today teaches that words wound just as much as bullets and his bullying remarks would not be welcome in today's US military. He probably hates Transexual Marines, too.
