re: If Texas's central grid only relied on solar & wind energy, would anyone have electricity?

They run wind turbines in Norway in the winter, you don't think with proper maintenance and installation they couldn't do it here? It was a combo of lack of infrastructure investments coupled with the age old question of how much risk do you try to mitigate.
Their turbines are designed for the climate. As are all turbines, they are all optimized for the region they are installed in. Do you really think there's just one universal design that works everywhere, onshore and offshore?

It was a once in a 20 year winter storm.
Try closer to 120 years. You obviously don't do math so it's now obvious why you don't grasp the engineering in play here.

We basically had the same type of event in 83 and 89.
Now we have 10M more residents and even more old/unprepared infrastructure as we did then. Heck, even 2004, 08 and 11 had huge widespread snowstorms straining the systems in Texas.

Read about 1983 when houston was below freezing for 91 hours straight.

I have a mechanical engineering degree and 15+ years of experience in energy and energy infrastructure advisory, but keep running your mouth.
Those wind turbines as they stand could have run in the weather if they had the proper lubrication and maintenance. The question is, is it worth the cost for the rarity of the event. The blame is not the concept of wind energy itself.
