Why judge?

Maybe they are pretentious, or maybe they belonged to his father passed away from cancer last week.

Exactly. Could be special to them in some way.

I wouldn't see it as pretentious. I think it's rather neat to have a special set in a wooden box.

I don't own chopsticks. I do own forks though and usually don't bring my own fork to a restaurant either, so I doubt I would bring my own chopsticks if I owned some
