It makes sense. North America has 5 major sports that have the top leagues in the world, MLB, NFL, PGA, NHL, and NBA. Add in the MLS, X Games, and other sports and the North American sports entertainment dollar is very divided.

It has a lot more to do with American sports leagues emphasizing profitability unlike their European counterparts. In the US, teams are businesses first and foremost.

Actually Messi was supposed to be sentenced for tax evasion but they reduced it to a fine.

I don’t think he was supposed to be sentenced
I believe in Europe if it’s a non violent crime like this you only pay fines

Spain’s tax laws are pretty gay

It’s like a right of passage for elite players there to get tried for tax evasion

The taxes in Spain are most likely insane. I doubt he takes home a lot of that.

Too funny!

A very, very rough estimate is that he’s be able to pocket around 48% of his earnings.

I’m sure he has some accountants working things to his favor, but if he did everything straight up Spain’s income tax rate for his earning is around 52%, give or take. That doesn’t include any regional or local taxes.

Only Messi is earning at this level, and I believe this includes his image rights. I think Ronaldo is earning a good bit less (from his club anyway), but it always gets difficult to compare because Italy usually reports after-tax salaries

What’s his agent’s cut and how much does he pay in taxes? All that salary means frick all of he only takes home 20% of it.

I'm no mathematician, but I'm pretty sure 20% of $674mil is more than 20% of $200mil or 0% of $674mil.

So yeah, sign me up.

Yeah, it would be kind of tough to scrape by on only $33,400,000/year (20% of $167,000,000).

You can be certain that he takes home at least 75% of that.
