My friend does closed captioning for live TV. In order to type as fast as speaking, they rely heavily on the “auto-complete” function as words are spoken.
COVID with a doctor speaking a pain, because you never know when they’ll rattle off 6 drug names in a row setting the whole process back 30 seconds, which is actually huge.
She’ll also do something like the 5PM Tulsa news, 6PM Chicago news, and a baseball game at 7:30PM in Seattle from her apartment in Vegas.
With a sign language interpreter there, the doctors and other speech writers can talk the interpreter through the technical terms that come up before hand so that it’s an accurate communication.

For the record, i'm not talking about hurricane evacuations which are obviously urgent or even COVID, although we could certainly argue the urgency of the BS being spewed in those press conferences.
I'm talking about the ginger chick at the white house spitting talking points for the press pool every day. Now all the sudden anytime theres a clip from the briefing room theres a split screen for sign language.

Mine too but he’s not talking about that.

Deaf people actually fight for this. There’s actually a language barrier and many, but not all, deaf people benefit from sign language. Closed captioning on live television is usually almost always a joke, either delayed or incorrect. Automated captioning is even worse, sometimes it’s perfect and sometimes it’s well... “Farmer Fran.” Either way it’s all besides the point, they fight for access to communication and you think one method is better than the other because it’s an inconvenience for you. Try putting yourself in their shoes.

Yes. This has always been a thing. You just only started caring about it now.

It’s actually a good thing and the deaf community really appreciates it

we now have to use a sign language interpreter on tv.
I always figure they are making shite up as they go. I watch for a common work and the person make one hand sign then when that word is said again its a whole new hand sign.

That's because it isn't always one gesture = one word. There are a lot of common phrases that have their own signs as a whole so if that word is being used again in a common phrase you'll see a different gesture.

Are you under the impression this is a new phenomenon?
