See, that's the thing though. She flat our TELLS him that she has come to terms with it and that having to choose between a life without him and being able to sleep at night, and a life with him and being worried at night, she's choose the sleepless nights (my best recollection of the quote).

It's almost like the writers were planning to have them end up together when they wrote that, then later decided to go with a "less than storybook happy ending".

I would have been more able to believe the outcome if not for the line I quoted above. That may have been one of the last scenes she's in before the last episode.

The twist needed more explanation in my opinion.

Words can be water though. It's easy to say that you're going to accept something like that, then don't. People make promises like that all of the time IRL and it doesn't pan out.

I just thought at that point they had too much "history" for it to really work out that well.
