I'll add my experience over the last year. I bought an old Lenovo I7 off of craigslist for less than $150 (don't remember the exact amount) and loaded xpenology on it. It's a way of running the Synology NAS OS on a desktop computer. I installed Docker on it and have it running my Unifi controller, Pi Hole, Plex server, along with Sonarr, Radarr, Lidarr, and Transmission. I started with a Home Assistant container, but haven't done anything with it yet.
