Considering they had a good friend die from it last month, they're not going to risk it. He was 68 and no pre-existing issues that they know of.
That sucks.
How many people do they know that have had it and not died?
And do they know anyone that’s ever died in a motor vehicle accident?

Not sure, but more than 1 I'd have to guess.

No, but your analogy doesn't work because car crashes aren't highly contagious.

That is their choice. They can hide in their house for as long as they want. My grandfather in England died last month: he spent the last 9 months of his life trapped between his house and a hospital room. At the end said he would’ve traded 8.5 of those months for .5 months of quality time, but luckily the British government decided that wasn’t his choice. PSA: the government isn’t letting this end anytime soon, my bet is deep into 2022 (if ever).
I’m 37 and could die tomorrow, life is finite for everyone. This “selfish” narrative is so off target, I can live my life however I want and your parents can hide in their house too.
First off, sorry to hear about your grandfather.
Second, they aren't hiding in their house. They go out plenty, but are safe about it, wear masks, etc. They're not going to get on a plane and travel to another country right now though for a number of reasons.
I get that it's a choice, however, I do think this is different than your typical day to day life choices. This is an extremely rare situation where the act of one person can have significant consequences downstream for others not in their direct circle due to how this thing spreads.
And I do think it's selfish to not follow pretty simple guidelines for a temporary amount of time so that we can keep others safe. We'll probably just have to agree to disagree on that.
I'm tired of having to wear a mask. I'm tired of working from home(even though it has it's benefits). I'm tired of having my wife's unemployment extended because she can't find another job in her industry(hospitality/corporate meetings and events) that's been decimated. I'm tired of not being able to travel. But, I'm going to be patient and continue to cooperate and do the things needed to help slow this thing down so that we can get back to that point because I know this is temporary and if everyone just gave up and said screw it, this thing would be 10x worse than it already is.
