Very kind of you Jim. I'll be at your mawmaw's place where we went last year.

If it's in Amite like the picture says, someone hunts them.

How would I hunt turkeys in the spring?

I’m hearing the turkeys are here year round.

What does a beginner need to know to hunt these birds?

Find out where they roost, first!

Get in the woods near that area VERY early. Sit your arse down against a big tree. Don't make a damn sound and don't f'ing move! Those birds hear and see EVERYTHING.

I used to hunt them pretty hard in my younger days. I talked to a lot of pro guides about hunting them. Guides from south Tx, Alabama, other places where turkey hunting is big business. At least 4 of them told me the same thing, almost in the exact words.

"If turkeys had a decent sense of smell, you'd probably never see them."

Their eyesight and hearing are excellent.

All great points given. One thing that hasn't been mentioned is that early in the season the toms will have plenty of hens to attract. They will likely not respond to calling very well unless it's a subordinate that has been kicked out by an older bird (2 YO turkeys are the best for early kills). As the season moves on, the dominant birds will react quicker to some soft early calling. It may still take a few hours, but instead of disappearing like Keyser Soze, they'll circle back around to you once the bred hens go to their nest mid morning. Get close to their roost, call softly, let them either work in or let them follow hens. Sit tight, they'll often times return later in the morning. The later gobble will be a surprise when you hear it. Also, on windy days they like to hit the fields later in the morning or afternoon.
