Gino Franceschini of New York City was only 5 feet 6-1/4 inches tall and had to be 5 feet 7 inches to qualify as a fireman. In 1941, he made the neck stretcher shown in the photo. When measured, he still lacked an eighth of an inch. He hit himself on head to make a bump—and still couldn’t make it. Poor guy.

They did let him become a firefighter:

After trying since August to acquire the extra half inch of height he needed for entrance into the Fire Department, Gino Franceschini finally made the grade and yesterday was marked qualified on the records of the Municipal Civil Service Commission.

Unfortunately for them, the fighting would go on.

Perkins at Seigen Baton Rouge, early 70s. I think the driver is on Perkins going towards Highland (east).
Reminds me of "County Line Road" in Jackson, Miss. from the 70's. I'd take that road off I-55 to get to the Ross Barnett Reservoir where I lived and worked and it was just a small rural 2 lane road with cow pastures, open land, the occasional Mom & Pop General Store.
Went up to Jakson around 2015 and saw it's a multi-lane road now with strip malls, apartment complexes, commercial businesses etc.

I wonder how deep the ghetto has penetrated into Ridgeland
