quote:
Becoming energy independent was the KEY to being able to tell the ME to frick off.
The arab countries don't have the industrial capacity to keep their militaries strong and "happy ($$$)" enough to keep their regimens in power. They could leverage oil in exchange for the US military being their security guards or at least military sells where the USA picked up part of the bill so the regimen(s) could afford to keep its military officers rich and happy. When the USA became energy independent the arab countries could no longer use oil as a negotiating tool. So in order to keep the USA from completely telling the ME to f**k off they had to offer something else. That something else was better relationships with Israel (which in the long run should lead to a more stable region and less reason(s) to have a US military presence there) and paying a closer to a fair price for military gear. So energy independence was not only the key to bringing multiple arab states to the table and signing peace deals with Israel as well as keeping the USA out of any more conflicts in the ME*.
*I still think that we would have gone to war with Iran last year if covid did not hit. It hit the USA hard but it really hurt Iran.
