Hello friendly Travel Board people, I could use some advice regarding a somewhat last-minute vacation to the Denver area. The Wife and son (11) want to see some snow and booked flights to Denver from Nola the first weekend of February. We're only staying 3 nights.

I have two main questions:

1) Where to stay?
I see that downtown Denver hotels are really cheap, and that's tempting since we're on a bit of a budget. However, we would probably prefer to stay somewhere in the mountains (goes back to the whole "snow" thing). Any recommendations on towns within 2 hours of Denver? Somewhere picturesque, not too high in elevation (we're coming from sea level). Don't care about night life or going out. Would prefer $150/night or lower.
Anyone with experience in Estes Park or Idaho Springs in the winter?

2) Where to ski?
This ties into where to stay. My son has never skied, so I anticipate spending the entire day on the bunny hill with him. Really just looking for a cheap ski area near one of the good towns. I don't want to drop $400 to stand on the bunny hill all day. Also don't mind driving up to an hour from where we stay.

Thanks.

Do not do downtown Denver, that's for sure.

Don’t stay in Denver. Idaho Springs is a great place to stop but not to stay.

This sounds a Ski Granby type of trip.

You should have asked me sooner and I would have told you to go to Utah.

I'm going for Mardi Gras, staying in Boulder as I won't have a vehicle and don't plan on renting. Boulder seems an area where I will be able to do some skiing and a lot of drinking.

How about Ski Cooper? Pretty cheap skiing, Leadville has a ton of cheap great bnbs, and Leadville is probably more beautiful in my mind than most of the well known ski towns. The only problem in my mind with Cooper is its small size but that shouldn’t be an issue if yall are going to be on the bunny slopes!

Get the hell out of Denver. I live here, and escape every single change I get even if it’s just for an afternoon.

Estes I great but no skiing.

On a budget, 2hrs from DIA, day of bunny hill skiing, and want some nice views? My vote goes Granby and ski Granby ranch.
